Introduction:

On November 19, 1922, in the village of Pivdenne in the Kharkiv region of Ukraine, Yuri Valentinovich Knorozov was born, a renowned ethnographer, linguist, and translator best known for deciphering Maya script.



 Artwork Description: In this captivating piece, Knorozov dons the regal style of Emperor Cuauhtémoc, the successor of Moctezuma Cuauhtémoc, the last Aztec emperor. The portrait draws inspiration from the historical painting at the Anthropological Museum, depicting Cuauhtémoc tortured by the Spanish, compelled to reveal the hidden royal treasures.

Knorozov's Contributions and Honors:


Yuri Valentinovich Knorozov (1922-1999) laid the foundation for the Soviet school of Mayan studies, decoding the script of the Maya people. He held a doctorate in historical sciences and received prestigious awards, including the Order of the Aztec Eagle (Mexico) and the Grand Gold Medal (Guatemala).

Challenges in the Path to Knowledge:

His journey into academia faced a significant obstacle during the German occupation of Ukraine in 1941-1945. Despite the challenges, Knorozov's escape in 1943 marked a pivotal moment, even though the occupation left its indelible mark.


International Recognition:


In 1990, Knorozov embarked on a two-month journey to Guatemala, receiving the Grand Gold Medal from the president. He visited Mexico in 1992 and 1995, being awarded the Order of the Aztec Eagle in 1994, presented at the Mexican Embassy in Moscow.


Memorials and Acknowledgments:


  • In the Mexican city of Merida, a monument to Knorozov stands near the Great Museum of the Mayan World.

  • A memorial plaque was unveiled in St. Petersburg in November 2022 to honor the historian on the house where he lived.

  • Knorozov is commemorated on a relief in the vestibule of the main building of Kharkiv University.

  • In 2016, a street in Kharkiv was named after Yuri Knorozov, recognizing his legacy.

  • In his hometown, Southern Ukraine, the street where Knorozov's house once stood, part of Karl Marx Street, was named after the scholar. A memorial plaque was installed in August 2019.
